SOCKS stands for SOCKet Secure and is an internet protocol that uses a proxy gateway to route packets between a client and a server. This is primarily used to escape a firewalled network, and bypass the security and other restrictions put into place. What is this restriction, when we know that the internet is free for anyone to access, provided an internet connection is there? Well, the internet is a huge place, and while there are loads of stuff that will make you learn and do something useful and productive, there is also a bunch of stuff on there that will only make you waste your time or do things that are against the policies of your workplace, school or network. How Socks Tunnel Work
SOCKS proxy works in conjunction with SSH tunneling, which can be termed as SOCKS tunnel, when combined. A SSH tunnel stands for Secure SHell, and is another internet protocol that performs communication between two computers, usually a client and a server. The difference between SOCKS and SSH is that SSH allows for encrypted communication of data, while SOCKS does not. When your data is encrypted, people who snoop in cannot understand the contents, and thus what you send remains a secret. This is another method to bypass the security restrictions, as when the firewall cannot understand what data is begin routed through it, it will simply let it pass. However, setting up SOCKS tunnel requires a little understanding of how data travels in the first place.
Whenever you request data from the internet (like clicking on an advertisement, or simply entering a website’s URL), the request travels first to the local router or modem, then to your ISP’s router or modem, then to the server’s computer through the internet. It must thus first pass through the local network, then through the ISP’s network, and finally over the internet. This is quite a long process, and allows for restrictions to be easily put at each and every stage. With SOCKS tunnel, you can simply skip the local and ISP part, and directly connect to the internet through another computer. To illustrate, consider this: you are in New Zealand, and your government has banned some websites. By routing your data via SOCKS and SSH tunneling through a computer in the United States, you can bypass all censorship rules, and access the blocked websites freely. This happens because the server of the website sees the incoming request as coming from a computer in the United Sates, and not New Zealand. This is also called IP hiding and proxy IP, which means hiding your original IP from the network and displaying a random or selected IP, thus assuming a fake identity. This is thus the easiest way to bypass any security firewall and browse the internet with no restrictions.
